Year 7
1. Singing and Ukulele Skills – In this unit we cover how to play the ukulele and sing simultaneously as well as focussing on developing our knowledge and understanding of musical vocabulary and styles.
2. Keyboard Skills – In this unit we cover basic keyboard skills, including how to read treble clef notation. Students are challenged to improvise in a jazz style!
3. Further Keyboard Skills – In this unit we continue to develop the keyboard skills we have been working on by introducing chords, as well as basslines and ensemble playing.
Year 8
1. Samba – In this unit we focus on developing the skill of reading and playing complex rhythms through learning Samba. Students get the opportunity to work in small groups and compose their own rhythms in order to create their own versions of Samba.
2. Band Skills – In this unit students are given the opportunity to play a variety of instruments from the pop genre including, guitar, bass, drums, ukulele, keyboard and voice and learn a pop song whilst developing the performance skills on these instruments. Students will be assessed playing an instrument.
3. Pop Composition – In this unit students apply the knowledge developed through unit 2 and compose their own pop songs in groups. Students will be assessed on both their performance of the pop song and the features included.
Further Study
Opportunities for students to further study and instrument at the school are available, as well as opportunities for students to continue developing these skills at extra-curricular clubs.
The KS3 schemes of work have been designed to set students up with the basic performance, composition and appraising skills for them to go on to study GCSE music.

In year 10 we begin to study the set works, this includes learning to play as many as we can, as well as listening to a wider variety of music to support our understanding of the stylistic features of the different genres. We also begin to develop our performance and composition skills through the various different schemes of work.

In year 11 we conclude the learning of the set works, as well as complete our coursework. In year 11 you will be assessed on your instrument by performing a solo and an ensemble of at least grade 4 standard. You will compose a free composition in a style of your choice, as well as composition that is based on a brief provided by the exam board.
Assessment
Unit 1 – Performance
Students are required to pick an instrument to study where they will be provided with free one to one tuition on that instruments. By the end of the course students will complete 2 pieces of coursework for this unit; a solo performance and an ensemble performance.
Unit 2 – Composition
Students will be required to complete 2 pieces of coursework for this unit, 1 composition that is to a brief set by the exam board and 1 composition that is of free choice to the pupil. Students are supported in developing the skills of writing their own music, and being able to answer a brief.
Unit 3 – Appraising Music
Students study 8 set works over the GCSE course and the appraising exam tests the students on their ability to notice, evaluate, appraise, comment on and compare music.

Each year the Music department along with the Dance and Drama departments put on a full-scale production of a musical as well as other various events including end-of-term concerts, Christmas festival, Classical Music Festival and many more events!
