Is this the right course for me?
Do you ever feel that you don’t know much about the world you live in? Do you accept everything as natural and inevitable? Do you want to understand the society you are a part of and the behaviour of the people around you?
Whilst your opinions can be shared in lessons, you will be assessed on your ability to write from a theoretical perspective. Sociology will help you to further enhance your writing skills, by enabling you to develop your explanations, apply your answer to the demands of the question and analyse key studies and evidence. Sociology will help you to become a critical thinker, by questioning sociological ideas and theories and challenging existing approaches.

How to support your child
Students will be encouraged to keep up-to-date with the latest events, both in Britain and abroad. Reading newspapers, watching the news on television and programmes e.g. documentaries about topical issues would be helpful in developing on awareness of sociological issues.
Students will be expected to complete tasks such as essay writing, worksheets and note taking at home. It is vitally important that students come to the lesson with their homework, completed to the very best of their ability. They will be given past exam packs to allow them to practice answering questions under timed conditions.
To support your son/daughter please read their work and perhaps ask them questions, to explain what they have written and why. Discussion at home of contemporary and controversial issues can be very useful in encouraging young people to have a mature understanding of society and different cultures. These expressions of interest in your son/daughter’s work and progress are an extremely motivating force which in turn will further their interest in learning.
