Dear parents and carers,

It is hard to believe that another academic year has flown by, as we look back on a year of success for our students, our staff and our school.

Throughout the year we have celebrated our young peoples’ achievements, both academic and in their personal development.  Seeing our students reach the end of the summer term, clearly ready for the next stage in their learning journey, is a significant accomplishment for our school community and reflects the immense work done in school and at home to enable them to reach this point.

As ever, my thanks to you, parents, carers and families, for your support and encouragement throughout.  Despite challenges we may face along the way, we are collectively ensuring we give our young people every opportunity to thrive, setting them up for their present and future successes.

Student achievement

I am delighted to share with parents the success of our primary children who, in all areas of recent assessments, have done incredibly well, outperforming many local and national schools, reflecting the hard work they have committed to this year.

79% of children achieved EYFS Good Level of Development, 95% passed the phonics assessment in Y1, 97% achieved full marks in the Y4 MTC and Y6 SATs saw children achieving expected standards achieved by 92% in reading, 86% in writing, 91% in Maths and 90% in Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling.  To put this in context, national averages for these areas sit at 72-75%.  Amongst these brilliant results, we also celebrate the fact that 83% of children achieved expected standards across Reading, Writing and Maths, compared to 62% nationally. This is a significant improvement on last year’s 70% and a result of the immense work that has been put in to drive standards in writing; SRS students have done so well!  I look forward to sharing these results in greater detail with you at the start of the autumn term but for now, congratulations to all of our students and huge thanks to their teachers and support staff!

Over the last week you will have received your child’s report (primary) and assessment results including Attitude to Learning reports (secondary).  Firstly, congratulations to all our students on the progress they have made this year.  The information provided will enable you to consider areas for focus for the year ahead as well as guidance as to how you can support at home.  We ask that you take some time to reflect on this with your child over the summer so that they are set up for success next term.

Thank you to our staff

Our young peoples’ achievements, year on year, reflect the dedication of an army of staff across the school who, day-in-day-out, bring enthusiasm and ambition for their students’ learning, progress and success.  We are fortunate to have a team of very talented, committed, nurturing staff who want nothing but the best for our young people.

I take this opportunity to express particular thanks to colleagues who are retiring this term. Mr Hill joined Sydney Russell School in 1993 as a Geography teacher, later moving into the role of Assistant Vice Principal and Designated Safeguarding Lead, through which he has been the champion of some of our most vulnerable young people, ensuring their safety, nurture and success, despite challenges they may face.  His work has touched the lives of many students and staff alike and I take this opportunity to thank him for his commitment to SRS and to wish him a long, healthy and happy retirement.

We also thank Ms Dyer, our Senior Finance Administrator who retires from SRS after 16 years with us and Ms Campen who has been with us for four years as part of our secondary Thrive team; we wish you both the very best for this new chapter.

Amongst colleagues who are leaving SRS this summer, we wish Mr Lewis every success as he takes up headship in Suffolk after 16 years at SRS, Ms Watling who left at the end of June for a new opportunity as Deputy Principal, Mr Nanor (one of the most passionate maths teachers you will ever meet!) as he moves to be a Deputy Head in north Essex and Mr Fossey, Head of Media Studies, as he moves with his family to the north of the country.

My thanks to colleagues who are leaving SRS for pastures new; we wish them every success and happiness in their new ventures.

Updates for September 2025

Start of school time for students – 8.30am

Further to the information shared with parents through the newsletter over the past month, please note the start of school time being 8.30am from 2nd September.

On the primary site, gates will open just before 8.30am and students will go to their classrooms as normal.

On the secondary site, doors will close at 8.30am and students must be in form by 8.35am.  Arrival after 8.30am will be ‘late’.

New caterers – welcome Olive Dining!

We are excited to announce that, from September, we will welcome Olive Dining as our caterers.  Please find a letter from them attached: Olive Dining – Sydney Russell Letter.pdf

Having gone through a rigorous process, Olive Dining have committed to ensuring high-quality, best-value meals which will entice our palates.

From September, water will no longer be sold in the canteen. Our new dining partners, Olive Dining, will provide free water refill stations instead (alongside our existing filtered water taps on the secondary site). Students should bring a reusable water bottle if they wish to have water during the school day.

I take this opportunity to thank Aspens for their work with us over the years and we wish them all the best for the future.

MCAS app (My Child at School app)

A letter has been sent to all parents regarding the final stages of our move to our new app, which will include payments for dinner money and trips as we prepare to move away from ParentPay.  Please follow the guidance in the letter (which is also available on the school website) to ensure a smooth transition for September.

Mobile device policy update – effective from 1st September 2025

Mobile Device Strategy – 2025 Update.pdf

Our Mobile Device policy has been updated and will come into effect on 1st September.

Parents are asked to note the guidance which has been added to our mobile device policy, specifically our recommendations that parents:

  • only provide their child with a basic phone (sometimes known as a ‘brick phone’) that does not allow internet access, if the primary reason for having a phone is safety while unaccompanied in public.
  • do not allow their child access to social media until at least the age of 13. If social media use is permitted, parents should thoroughly check all platforms their child accesses daily. This should include all messages, deleted items and chats including group chats.
  • remove their child’s access to social media for a substantial period if they behave inappropriately online.
  • report any inappropriate behaviour on social media by their child—or any other child who attends the school—to the school, along with any available evidence (e.g. screenshots).
  • set a ‘digital sunset’—a specific time each day after which their child is not allowed to use their phone. This should be at least 30 mins to an hour before their bedtime to help improve sleep quality.
  • after this ‘digital sunset’, parents should take their child’s phone to ensure it is not kept in the bedroom overnight. It should be charged in a different room.
  • limit overall screen time per day or week.

Further to this, at the secondary site, the following procedures will be effective from 1st September 2025:

  • If a student’s mobile phone is seen or heard at any time while on the school site, it will be confiscated and held at the Front Office. The device can be collected by the student after school on the next working day. This rule applies throughout the entirety of the student’s time on site, including before and after school hours*.
  • If a device is confiscated on a Friday or the last day of school before a holiday and a parent would like their child to have it over the weekend/holiday, then it can be collected on the same day after school finished by a parent. Please note it cannot be collected by the child in this instance.

*Please speak to your child about this policy change.  Students had previously been allowed to turn their phone on when they were leaving school and in the atrium area – this is no longer the case.

Students will be able to turn on their phone when they are on the front concourse area as they leave; this is within the school grounds but outside of the school main front entrance.

Personal Development / Relationships, Sex and Health Education – parent consultation

This week all parents will have received a letter (sent via email/My Child at School app) containing details of our parent consultation in line with updates to our policy.  The letter can also be found on our website.  The consultation period will close on Friday 5th September and will include an opportunity for parents to attend online meetings to discuss the policy updates.

If you have not received a copy of the letter via email or the school app, please contact office@sydneyrussellschool.com with your correct email address and download the My Child at School app to ensure all future communications reach you.

Parent information and guidance – The National College

Friends of SRS – PTA organisation

In September we will be sharing details of our PTA, encouraging parents of children in primary, secondary and Sixth Form to join us in raising funds to enhance the school’s resources and opportunities that can be offered to our students.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank members of our existing PTA for all their hard work this year – we hope to work with you again in the year to come.

Summer holiday activities

Summer activities available in the local area are included in this week’s newsletter.  We also urge you to encourage your children, no matter their age, to read as much as possible during the summer break.  We have published a fantastic guide to high-quality age-appropriate texts for your children to enjoy (see the school website: https://www.sydneyrussellschool.com/?p=10900).

A great way to stay motivated in your reading is by joining the Summer Reading Challenge 2025!  You can sign up for FREE and get access to lots of books, activities and resources as well as track your progress in the challenge!  https://summerreadingchallenge.org.uk/

You will find a suggested reading list on our school website, detailing books which can be easily sourced from your local library.  You can also access FREE books and magazines through Press Reader using your library card details, take a look at https://www.pressreader.com/

Summer online safety

In line with our Mobile Device strategy, please continue to be vigilant of your child’s online activity throughout the summer break – please check their social media and messages to ensure they are behaving appropriately online.  We strongly encourage a ‘digital sunset’ – a time in the day when phones/digital devices are put away/no longer used by children, to ensure they have sufficient breaks from screens.

Preparing for the new academic year

Once we have had a good break, our thoughts will turn to the new year ahead, and there are a few points I ask you to note:

  • To ensure we always maintain the highest standards of behaviour and conduct across the school, I ask you to re-familiarise yourself with the school’s behaviour policy which can be found on the school website, please read this carefully.

  • The behaviour policy also includes uniform expectations and I ask for your continued support in ensuring skirt lengths are correct (at least to the knee) and that trousers fit correctly at the waist and are worn at the waist.

  • All students are asked to note that a reading book is a compulsory part of school equipment.  For primary and KS3 students, this is a book from their reading scheme (including the accelerated reader programme).  For students in Years 10-13, this can be an appropriate (see guidance on our reading lists) fiction or non-fiction book which can be sourced from our school library, home or a local library.

  • In the year ahead, a continued focus within our School Improvement Plan (SIP) will remain on developing students’ literacy skills, specifically writing in the primary phase and reading in the secondary. Therefore, your encouragement of your child’s reading during the summer break will further support their preparations for the new academic year ahead. I look forward to sharing further details on this and other school improvement priorities in September.
