Summer Showcase Spectacular

Orchestra, SRSMusic, Summer Concert

CmN-_BlWkAAblXGLast week, there was the latest production by the Music Department, the Summer Concert. Once again parents, staff and students were stunned by the quality of the performances and the assurance of the students. The programme was even more varied, a combination of classical pieces, pop and jazz, and students’ own compositions. New to Sydney Russell concert was a clarinet group, who performed the waltz from `Up.’ The Percussion Ensemble reprised their stunning performance of Taiko and the first half of the concert was brought to a dramatic end by another performance of O Fortuna by the orchestra and combined choirs. The finale was a tribute to David Bowie and Prince: students gave a soulful and very professional performance of Major Tom and Purple Rain.

While the performances looked effortless, obviously this was the result of huge commitment and hard work from the students and staff. The staff performers were Ms Bradby (piano), Ms Burton (violin), Ms Davies (flute), Mr Sands (saxophone) and Mr Williams (percussion). We can only admire their talent and commitment. As well as their contribution to the concert, they act as rôle models to the students, illustrating that performing is something that can be enjoyed throughout life. I’d also like to applaud Ms Peck and Mr Valerio who did such a good job to ensure that the progression from one piece to another was seamless. Of course, I need to congratulate Ms Ambrose and Ms Edwards for producing such wonderful performances from staff and students. Finally, thank you to those members of staff who supported the performers by attending the concert.
