In the Mathematics Department, we believe that all students have the right to achieve their potential in school and be as positive, capable and confident Mathematicians, able to communicate and use Mathematics as everyday skill. Through a range of support offered in the department and ability setting, we aim to cater for the needs of all students and strive for a supportive environment where those who lack confidence ask for help and where students feel challenged.
It is our goal that students become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, so that they develop their conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately through reasoning mathematically and solving problems.
We value the opinions of our students and their parents/carers and aim to make the learning of mathematics an enjoyable experience.
We offer a range of after-school and morning interventions, based on a tailored revision plan based for students to consolidate their understanding and challenge themselves to the best of their abilities across the key stages.
The Department participates in the UK Junior/Intermediate Maths Challenge organised by University of Leeds.
Maths Resources
The classrooms are state of the art classrooms with 32 computers in each room for students and teachers to have planned lessons which are computer base. Students have access to a number of online resources including MyMaths, MathsWatch, Maths Workout and Numeracy Workout, Numeracy Warm-up and Geogebra. The teaching resources such as textbooks and worksheets are also electronically available for students to access.
Key Stage 3
The Key Stage curriculum, follows the key stage National curriculum strain comprising topics under Number, Algebra, Geometry and Measure and Statistics. Our programme of study is design to provide the opportunity for students to master the fundamental mathematical skills and concepts from topic. We allow our students to learn and explore mathematics through investigative activities and develop their problem solving skills.
Numeracy Focus Group (NFG)
The Numeracy Focus group has been developed to address underperformance within Mathematics from KS2 to KS3. Greater time is spent allowing skills to be learnt, developed, and then embedded using a variety of adapted approaches thus resulting in greater progress at KS4.
Key Stage 4 – GCSE
The programme of Study covers topics under Number, Algebra, Geometry and Measure and Statistics. The PoS is structured to allow students to become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics and develop their conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately through reasoning mathematically and solving problems.
